The term spa comes from a town in Belgium called Spa. During medieval times, iron deficiencies were cured by drinking iron bearing or chalybeate spring water. The mineral springs in Spa, Belgium was famous for the origin of the term “spa”. From then on, the word spa was regarded as any place that has a mineral or medicinal spring.
In modern times medical water threatments such as thalassotherapy are generally a luxury afforded to those with some measure of surplus wealth. That’s certainly the case with the world’s most expensive spas.
Surprisingly, the three most expensive spas in the world are all located in the US. One of them is in California’s Bay Area. The Grand Luxe Facial, offered by Spa Radiance in San Francisco, includes Diamond Peel Microdermabrasian, which seems to involve sanding—er, exfoliating your face with tiny diamonds, Microcurrent Disencrustation to remove blackheads and sebum deposits, treating your eyes with caviar and LED light therapy to counteract sun damage. The process entire process takes three hours to complete and costs $750.

 

New York’s Mandarin Oriental offers an even longer treatment. Their Art of Indulgence mostly involves massages but also includes exfoliation and both a manicure and pedicure. At $1,034, this five-hour session makes Mandarin Oriental the second most expensive spa.

The most expensive spa in the world, however, is located in Florida. Available only to guests of the Hotel Victor in South Beach, Spa V offers a bath filled with nearly 350 gallons of Evian mineral water then showered with rose petals. The bath is creatively referred to as the Evian Bath and costs a phenomenal $5,000.

Then $1 million worth in loose diamonds are placed along your spine as a massage therapist gently massages your back. Not surprisingly, it's a popular luxury among Hollywood stars and the well-to-do. BBB Beer Spa is the latest spa in the Czech Republic to use beer! According to the spa's website, the yeast in beer has "curative effects and preventative measures." The spa is located in the Bahenec Wellness Hotel in the area of Slezské Beskydy, where guests are fully immersed in Czech nature. Indulge in a beer bath called Bier-Bottich-Bad, where you'll even be able to knock down a pint or two. Following the beer bath, enjoy the Finnish sauna, and end the two hour treatment with a nap on an oat straw bed. The entire treatment costs 160 Czech Koruna or $8.80.

The Kenwood Inn & Spa, the first Vinotherapie center in the United States, has the latest scientific discoveries involving the vine and grape seed extracts to keep you young. Grape seeds are rich in the antioxident polyphenol which slows the aging of the skin. Kenwood ingredient treatments consist of grape and red vine extracts as well as organic essentail oils. The treatments are administered in a barrel bath cabin and patio that look out over the vineyards. Unlike the beer bath you don't soak in wine, but instead bubbling water with finely crushed grapes extracts and organic oils.

 For shiny hair today you need truffles and caviar. Most people can't even afford to eat these delicacies, but in a beauty salon called Hari's in South Kensington, London fish eggs, which are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, are flown in from Iran just a few days before your appointment.
